23/03/05 Will eBay Unite Father, Son? Michele Mandel THE OSHAWA man first began his quest for his son by listing his kidney on eBay for $50,000. "Desperate times mean desperate measures," explains Rick, who does not want his last name used. The 48-year-old car salesman is desperate for cash, $50,000, to be exact. It's the sum he owes his ex-wife in spousal support, and he believes that paying up is the only way that, after almost five years, he'll finally be allowed to see his beloved son again. But he soon learned that the online shopping service takes a dim view on trading in body parts. So he decided that, if a grilled cheese sandwich can sell for $28,000 US on eBay, he'll raise $50,000 by auctioning watchbands to "Help Rick." "I know that a lot of you will think that this is a scam but I am 100% legitimate," he writes on his eBay site posted a few days ago. "As you have read this I am sure a lot of people will say that it's my situation and I created it and I must deal with it. To that I will say try and live with the fact that you know where your son is and that you haven't been allowed to call, talk or see him for over four years ... Please help me." As of yesterday, though, he had had only one bid, for $10. "Where's Donald Trump when you need him," he says ruefully. HELL TO PAY He knows his fundraising methods may seem unorthodox, but he doesn't know what else to do. His marriage dissolved in 2000 after he left his wife for another woman and it's been hell to pay ever since. Their bitter divorce tale, with restraining orders on both sides, would put even the War of the Roses movie to shame, he writes. What aches the most, he says, is that he hasn't been allowed to see or speak to his son since he was 10, more than four years ago. His ex-wife tells him their 14-year-old doesn't want any contact with him but he's convinced that she's poisoned their boy against him. "I think this whole thing is motivated by money," Rick says as he pleads his case in a Pickering coffee shop. "I feel he's being held ransom and it's horrible that she's put a price on his head." Meanwhile, the court system, he says, acts as her willing accomplice. After months of her harassment, he lost his well-paying job as a sales manager and, despite 251 job applications, could not find a similar one. So while he makes far less money now, the courts bought his ex-wife's argument that he is "intentionally underemployed" and insisted he continue paying her $3,450 a month, something he cannot afford to do. "I don't know what they expect," he complains. The Family Responsibility Office already takes 60% of his income. They've garnisheed his bank account and cashed in his RRSP. Even if they took his entire paycheque, he says he'd still be $100 a month in arrears. He's currently trying to get the support order reduced before the courts, but in the meantime, the FRO is nipping at his heels, threatening to put him in jail. Still not satisfied, his ex-wife has posted his name, photo and picture of his home on a website dedicated to humiliating deadbeats dads. "I am not the monster she's put up on the screen," Rick insists vehemently. "I am not a deadbeat dad; I am not even 50 cents behind on my child support." KIDNEY SALE IDEA FAILED But as for spousal support, he can't keep up and every month he falls further and further behind, as does the chance of ever seeing his son again. "I can't do it on my own," he says. So he came up with the rather crazy idea of selling his kidney on eBay. When they booted him off, he had to downscale his strategy and sell watchbands instead. The response so far has been surprising, he says. He expected people to be critical but instead, he's been amazed by the number of sympathetic e-mails he's received. One woman offered to pray for him. "I'd rather she buy something," he says with a smile, "but if she wants to pray for me, fine." Still, there are few bidders, and no amount of sympathy is going to pay off his ex-wife, or reunite him with his child. Before he leaves the coffee shop, he looks up with misted eyes and asks if we can add just one more thing. "If somebody recognizes who I am and sees my son," he says softly, "tell him I'm thinking of him." And then he leaves to check if an online auction will bring him any closer to the child he misses every single day. |
The so-called 'oppression' of
women ...

Western men die some five years earlier than
women. They suffer more from nearly every medical disease and ailment that there is.
And yet, far more money is spent by governments on women's health than on men's
health. Men are also nowadays educationally disadvantaged significantly compared to
women; with the curriculum, the teaching methods and the resources being
designed to cater far more for women and girls than for men and boys. Men make up 80% of the homeless. There are more of them in
social service care-homes as
boys. They are many times more likely to be wrongfully arrested, wrongfully imprisoned, mugged, assaulted or murdered. They are 5 times more likely to lose their
children when families break down, 4 times more likely to lose their homes, 4 times more likely to commit suicide,
20 times more likely to be killed or injured at work, 20 times more likely to be
imprisoned, and, probably, more than 100 times more likely to be demeaned, denigrated and ridiculed by the
mainstream media. Men also pay much more in taxes than women but receive far
less in benefits from the government.
In other words, when compared to women, men are
significantly disadvantaged when it comes to their health, their lifespans, their homes, their
children, their education, their families, the tax burden, the law, the benefit
system, and even when it comes to their
own personal
safety.
They are nowadays also being heavily discriminated against in the work
place.
How is it possible, therefore, that women are being 'oppressed' more than men?
In what areas?
